Great Ocean Road Clean Up Day

The Great Ocean Road is one of the most scenic and popular destinations in Australia, attracting millions of tourists every year. However, tourism also brings environmental challenges, such as littering, pollution and habitat degradation. That's why we are launching a fun lunchtime clean-up initiative to help preserve the natural beauty and biodiversity of our coastal region.

We have teamed up with the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority to initiate an inaugural Great Ocean Road Clean Up Day event that will get the community involved for a few hours of fun and action picking up rubbish. See below for the details on this year’s event.

Enjoy the stunning views of Bass Strait and Spring Creek, meet like-minded friends, and help make a positive impact on the environment. We will provide you with all the necessary equipment and guidance to collect and dispose of the rubbish safely and responsibly. We will also have some games, prizes and refreshments to reward your efforts.

Over the summer of 2024 we have seen the number of visitors skyrocket back to pre-Covid levels - and with them comes more rubbish and damage to our precious ecosystem along the Great Ocean Road. Litter on our lands and in waterways is a major environmental problem. It not only affects our health, but also severely impacts our local wildlife. Through the Great Ocean Road Clean Up Day, we hope to help alleviate this problem.

We want to be part of the solution

As a nation, Australia produced 75.6 million tonnes of waste in 2020-21 (the last year for which data is available), according to the National Waste Report 2022. This was up from 70 million tonnes in 2016-17. Landfill emissions are a major environmental problem that can be reduced by diverting waste from landfills. Recycling, reusing, and down cycling are some of the strategies that can help achieve this goal.

One unique example of a successful initiative is our rPET souvenir range. Australian school children get involved by collecting milk bottle caps, which are then transformed into recycled and recyclable souvenirs featuring Australian animals. This way, the plastic waste is given a new life and a new value, while also raising awareness and appreciation for the native wildlife.

Our director, Carlo Lowdon, said “This is a great opportunity to show your love and appreciation for the Great Ocean Road and its amazing wildlife. By participating in this clean up, you will help us protect this precious ecosystem and ensure that future generations of locals and tourists can enjoy it as well.”
